How to prepare a motorcycle for shipping
Quick answer
To prepare a motorcycle for shipping, wash it, take dated photos of every side, leave about a quarter tank of fuel, charge the battery, check tire pressure, empty or remove bags, take off loose accessories, disable the alarm, and leave one key for the driver.

The checklist
- 1Wash the bike so scratches and chips are easy to see during the pickup inspection.
- 2Photograph all four sides, the tank, fenders, exhaust, and the odometer, in good light.
- 3Run the fuel down to about a quarter tank. You do not need to drain it.
- 4Charge the battery so the bike can be ridden or rolled on and off easily.
- 5Set tire pressure to the normal riding level.
- 6Empty hard saddlebags and tour packs. Remove soft bags, tank bags, and anything on a quick-release.
- 7Take off GPS units, phone mounts, and loose covers.
- 8Turn off or tell us about any alarm or immobilizer.
- 9Fold or note mirrors, tall windshields, and anything that sticks out.
- 10Leave one key, and make sure the person releasing the bike knows the pickup window.
Tell us about anything unusual
Mention it when you book if the bike does not run, leaks fluid, has a flat tire, has a locked steering head with no key, or has extended forks, a sidecar, or a lowered suspension. These change how the bike is loaded, and the driver needs to know before arriving.
On pickup day
Walk around the bike with the driver and agree on its condition before you sign. Keep your copy of the paperwork and your photos until the bike is delivered and you have checked it.
FAQ
How to prepare a motorcycle for shipping: common questions
How much gas should be in the tank when I ship my motorcycle?
About a quarter tank or less. That is enough to load and unload the bike, and it keeps the weight and fire risk down. There is no need to drain it.
Should I wash my motorcycle before shipping?
Yes. Dirt hides scratches, and a clean bike makes the pickup inspection and your own photos accurate.
Do I need to remove the windshield or mirrors?
Usually not. Tell us if you have an unusually tall windshield or wide mirrors so we can plan the space. Folding mirrors in is a good habit.
What should I do with my motorcycle alarm?
Turn it off or leave clear instructions. An alarm that goes off on the truck drains the battery and cannot be reset by the driver.
Can I leave my motorcycle cover on?
No. A loose cover can rub the paint on the road. In an enclosed trailer the bike is already protected from weather.
